If exposed screws are being used you will have to find the set screw which is normally found on the inside of the door.
If it is a threaded shaft you will have to twist the shaft s handle to make it flush with the door.
You can tighten a simple interior mortise lockset like the one shown at left as follows.
Apply a little powdered graphite into the handle s keyhole if the lock is stiff or hard to operate.

Take note of the type of resistance.
Look around the collar on the doorknob and identify the set screw that is threaded into the collar.
Take doorknob to hardware store if necessary.
